#98 These foods are stinky, but delicious!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese! Do smelly things taste good? Many people will definitely say, "How is that possible?" However, in China, there are some foods that are both smelly and delicious. What are these foods like? How much of them have you tried? Today, let's talk about those stinky but delicious foods.

One fruit that is particularly popular in China is the durian. Durian is a type of fruit from Thailand. Gradually more and more people like to eat durian in China. When you eat durian for the first time, you may feel very smelly, and you may even throw up. But after you eat it once, you are likely to fall in love with the taste, and even feel that it is very fragrant and sweet. In China, people also use durian to make desserts, such as durian cake. People even use durian to make dishes, such as durian hot pot, durian stewed chicken, and so on.

If you love tofu, you've probably heard of stinky tofu. How did people make stinky tofu? Long time ago, someone went out. When he came back, the tofu in his house was stinky because it had been left for too long. This person deep-fried the stinky tofu and found that although the tofu smelled stinky, it tasted delicious. Now, many factories ferment tofu to turn it into a relatively clean and hygienic stinky tofu. Stinky tofu has different flavors in different places, but the most famous one is the stinky tofu in Changsha, Hunan. People first deep-fry stinky tofu, and then add chili and other sauces. A Changsha stinky tofu that smells bad but tastes delicious is ready. Because Mao Zedong liked to eat stinky tofu in Changsha in the past, people would think of Changsha, Hunan whenever they mentioned stinky tofu. In addition to Changsha stinky tofu, there are also some places that use stinky tofu to make hot pot. This kind of hot pot is also called "stinky pot". Everyone has a different opinion on the taste of stinky tofu. Those who like it would love it, and those who don't like it would hate it. If you're brave, you can go to China and try stinky tofu.

Speaking of smelly and fragrant food, then rice noodles in river snails’ broth must be mentioned. In southern China, people like to eat rice, but also like to eat rice noodles. Rice noodles are noodles made of rice. In Liuzhou, Guangxi, there is a very famous rice noodle, that is rice noodles in river snails’ broth. 螺蛳, in Guangxi dialect, are snails in the river. People in Liuzhou use snails to make broth, then put rice noodles in it. Some people also put some meat and vegetables. Finally, people will definitely add picked bamboo shoots. Picked bamboo shoots are fermented bamboo shoots that smell bad and taste sour and spicy. Some people say that snail powder smells like urine stayed for a long time, but it tastes delicious. Many people think it is disgusting before they eat, but after eating it, they can’t stop. 一发不可收拾 is an idiom, which means that once you start, you can't stop. Now, there are many factories in Liuzhou that make packaged rice noodles in river snails’ soup. On Chinese shopping websites, rice noodles in river snails’ broth are the most popular food for young people.

  1. I just learned about this podcast, and I am a Mandarin beginner. On a trip to Malaysia, a “friend” took me on a walk to get durian. As we approached the market a nasty smell similar to sewage hit me and I asked what it was. He said that it was what we were getting ready to buy and eat. Luckily, I am very adventurous with my food, so I was still able to taste it. Yes, I like durian! It is not a favorite, but I will eat it fresh any time it is available to me. Many establishments post signs “NO DURIAN” due to the smell. Thank you for the memories and smells to go along with them. I am not sure I could get stinky tofu in my mouth if the urine comparison hits me. Yikes!

  3. Molly
