#78 A young American video blogger building a bridge between America and China

Podcast Transcript

Hello everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese. We often see all kinds of reports and all kinds of opinions on the news. For example, the Chinese media sometimes criticizes the United States, and the American media sometimes criticizes China. But do the people of the two countries really know about each other? There is an American video blogger who works hard to make a lot of objective videos to let Chinese and Americans understand each other. His name is Jerry Kowal, and his Chinese name is Guo Jierui. Today, let's talk about Jerry Guo and his video!

Guo Jierui was born in 1992 and is an American. He speaks Chinese and was an exchange student in Taiwan. Around 2018, he started making videos and posting them on Bilibili, a Chinese video site. At the beginning, people paid attention to him because his video ending was very special. At the end of his videos, he often says:

"Okay, then I'll go now! Bye! I'm Guo Jerry!"

Shouting out his Chinese name at the end of the video sounds funny. Now, Guo Jierui has more than 20 million fans. What do people like about him? Why are his videos so popular? I think there are three reasons:

The first reason: Guo Jierui has unique personality. He likes spicy food. He often eats delicious food in China. Because his Chinese is not very good, after food, he often only says: "This is not spicy!" or "This is a little spicy! I think this is delicious!" Everyone thinks his personality is very interesting.

The second reason: He is very objective. At first, he made videos just to practice speaking Chinese. Later, he was very interested in cultural differences, so he made a lot of videos about cultural differences. For example, the comparison of Chinese and American savings, the food waste in China and the United States, how China and the United States help poverty, and so on. During covid-19 pandemic, he went to interview Americans who were reluctant to wear masks. Although he didn’t fully agree with their point of view, he had no criticism or opposition, he just wanted to show everyone's thoughts objectively.

The third reason: He respects the culture of every place. In addition to China and the United States, Guo Jierui also went to many countries. For example, he has been to India to film slums in India, and he has also interviewed rich people in India. He has also been to Ukraine, making videos of the prices of Ukraine and the lives of ordinary people. He also traveled to the Amazon rainforest in Peru, where he lived with the locals. However, he never said a place was good or bad. He believes that people in different places have different lives, so he will only experience the local life.

In one of his interviews, he said this:

"I think as an American, I love my country. I want my country to improve. I think our news can be a little less critical of China, and I think in addition to improving the relationship between China and the United States, I think this can also help the United States make progress. Why? Because China has a lot of technological things that the United States does not have now. Then I think if Americans can realize this thing, they may make the request (to the government). I don’t say this to praise China. No. In fact, I want Americans to know about this. I don’t mean to help China boost confident or praise it. This can help my own country.”

Guo Jierui said that he made a lot of videos in order to let more Americans understand China and hope that the United States can make more progress. In fact, no matter where we come from, we need to learn about different countries, cultures, and people. Because only by understanding others can we understand ourselves. What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts with us!

  1. I am in my thirties and it took me years to learn each of two other foreign languages as a hobby to a level where I can read novels and understand podcasts. Chinese is the third one I am learning, and my prior experience in language learning made it seem to me that MaoMi Chinese would be very effective. Spoiler alert: IT IS. I started learning Chinese in mid-April 2022, mostly using MaoMi Chinese. After listening to and reading every episode of the podcast, I can now readily understand maybe 80% of the content of the newer episodes, something that took me years to achieve with my other foreign languages, especially with the spoken language! Molly chooses interesting topics and speaks clearly, and the transcripts with the pop-up dictionary and English translations are game-changers, especially since Chinese has a writing system that would otherwise be quite a barrier for those of us just beginning to learn the language. Exceptionally well-designed overall. Thank you so much for creating MaoMi Chinese!

Oh thank you so much Chico! Your words make my day and I feel it worths every effort that I put in making the podcast!

  2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE MaoMi Chinese! For me, it’s REALLY hard to find listening material that is the right level – everything seems either too easy or WAY too hard. But I have finally found this wonderful podcast – it’s EXACTLY what I was looking for! I don’t understand everything, but I can follow the general topics fairly comfortably. I listen to each episode many times, until I understand every word. Your content is really great – very interesting, and the length is just right, too. Your voice is PERFECT for me – you speak very clearly, and the speed is also really helpful. (I can understand faster speech if I’m pushed, but then I miss tones and always feel like I’m falling behind.) Thank you SO much for this great podcast , it’s easy to tell how much work that you put in. You are very appreciated!

  3. Every new episode is the perfect difficulty level. I listen to each episode several times over several days and let the vocab soak in naturally. Then I like coming here to practice reading too! I like to start my day by listening to Maomi while getting ready for work. Thank you for putting in so much time and effort to create an amazing and interesting resource like this!
