Podcast Transcript

大家好!欢迎回来MaoMi Chinese!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!

Do you like to read books? How many books do you read each month? I often hear many people say that more and more people are watching Tiktok, watching short videos, and scrolling on social media, but fewer and fewer people are reading books. Is it true? Do Chinese people still read books now? Do they still like to read? Today, we will talk about this topic, and also talk about words related to reading.

What do you do when you have free time? One of my friends said: "Watching short videos, playing with mobile phones, from opening to closing eyes. Just can't stop." Yeah, who doesn't like playing with mobile phones? Because playing with mobile phones is really addicting! The subways in many Chinese cities are equipped with Wi-Fi, and almost everyone uses their mobile phones on the subways.

Do you still read paper books? Paper books, meaning books made of paper. In 2019, China conducted a reading survey and found that Chinese adults only read about four paper books a year, and only read about 20 minutes a day. However, more and more people choose to read e-books or listen to audiobooks. So what do they spend most of their time doing? As you might have guessed, it's playing with their phone. The 2019 survey also showed that Chinese adults spent an average of about 100 minutes a day scrolling on their phones. What are they watching on their phones? Usually reading news, watching videos and social media. These are called fragmented reads. Fragmented reading means that the reading time is very short and not continuous. The survey said that Chinese adults read less deeply. Deep reading means that the reading time is relatively long and the content of the reading is relatively deep.

I don’t think it’s just the problem of Chinese people, but most people all over the world, because using mobile phones is so addictive. In a short period of time, fragmented reading can make people feel very happy. However, fragmented reading pages make people lazier and lazier, and they are unwilling to think. They are also less and less focused. There is amazing technology in modern life, but it also makes our pace of lives faster and faster. Do you think this is good or bad? Are you still reading? Welcome to leave us a comment to share!
