Hello everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese! In a previous podcast, someone commented that they would like me to introduce where they can go if they travel to China. Today I want to recommend to you one of my favourite places in China. If you like good weather and sunbathing, this place must be suitable for you; if you like to eat delicious food, you can't miss this place; if you like to see the scenery of nature, then you must also come to this place; if you like to study different local culture, then this is also an ideal place. This place is Yunnan, China.
If I only had half a year and could only go to one place in China, I don’t think I will choose Beijing, Shanghai and other big cities, but would definitely choose Yunnan Province. Yunnan Province is on the southwestern border of China. It is bordered by Myanmar to the west, Laos to the south, and Vietnam to the southeast. In Yunnan Province, more than 33 percent of the people are ethnic minorities. For these two reasons, the local culture in Yunnan is very diverse. In Yunnan, you can experience the culture of Southeast Asia, and you can also learn about the culture of Chinese ethnic minorities.
Yunnan Province has mountains, rivers and lakes. If you like hiking, you will definitely see all kinds of scenery in Yun. Yunnan's climate is also very comfortable. Its provincial capital is Kunming, and Kunming also has another name, which is "Spring City". It means a city where its climate is like spring all year round. Yunnan's summer is not particularly hot, and winter is not particularly cold. There is an idiom in Chinese, "the four seasons are like spring", which means that the climate of a place is as comfortable as spring in all seasons. I think the idiom "the four seasons are like spring" is used to describe Yunnan. However, Yunnan also has many snow-capped mountains. If you like snow, you can also go to Snow Mountain in winter.
Yunnan's local culture is also very diverse. There are many ethnic minorities in Yunnan, and many of them have different languages and living habits. When I was travelling in Yunnan, I met some friends from the Naxi minority. They showed me their writings. They were so beautiful. Every word was like a picture. I put some pictures of the Naxi writing on MaoMi Chinese's website and you are welcome to take a look. Of course, because Yunnan's culture is diverse, so are the local foods. I especially like Yunnan cuisine, which is one of my favourites. Among them, one of my favourite foods is Yunnan rice noodles. Rice noodles are noodles made from rice. When I was in Yunnan, I ate rice noodles almost three meals every day, because it was so delicious! Yunnan food is very special. In Yunnan, people eat all kinds of flowers. Yunnan's flower cakes are particularly famous. In Yunnan, you can also eat all kinds of insects. I heard that it is very delicious, but I haven't tried it because I am too timid! If you are brave, you can go to Yunnan and try all kinds of insects!
Having said so much about Yunnan, if we really go to Yunnan, where can we go? To be honest, there are too many famous scenic spots in Yunnan. If you like ancient towns, you can go to Dali, Lijiang, and Shuhe, etc. In these places, you can see what ancient Yunnan was like. If you like nature, you can go to Pu'er, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, or Lugu Lake. There are waters and mountains in these places, which are beautiful and moving. If you want to experience city life, then you can go to Kunming. The traffic in Kunming is very convenient. The local people live a very leisurely life, and there is also delicious food.
