Hello everyone. Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese. Today let’s carry on talking about the Beijing Winter Olympics. Last time we talked about Eileen Gu, a rising star who attracts tremendous attention in the Beijing Winter Olympics. Today, we are going to talk about another athlete. He is Japanese, and might also be one of the most popular Japanese athletes in China. His name is Yuzuru Hanyu, a figure skator.
Before Yuzuru Hanyu came to Beijing to participate in the competition, many people asked every day on Chinese social media websites: "When will Yuzuru Hanyu come?" After he came to Beijing, people paid great attention to his competition. Every day there are news reports about him. Those who know the history of China and Japan may know that because of the war, the relationship between China and Japan has always been tense. Why is Yuzuru Hanyu, as a Japanese, so popular? Why do so many people like him and support him? I think this is because Yuzuru Hanyu's experience has inspired many people, and he is admired by them. His life is about passion and never giving up.
Yuzuru Hanyu was born in the northeast of Japan in 1994. He started skating when he was only 4 years old. In 2004, he started participating in national competitions in figure skating. After this, he participated in many international competitions and won many medals. At the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics, Yuzuru Hanyu won two gold medals in figure skating. His success comes from his talent and hard work. Because of skating, he was injured all over, but no matter how hard the training was, he never gave up.
In 2014, while participating in an international competition, Yuzuru Hanyu collided with another athlete during a warm-up. He broke his head and his blood stained the ice. He passed out. When he woke up and everyone told him to quit the game, he said, "It's ok, I'm going to keep skating until I die." He continued the show with the bandages on his head. In just a few minutes, he fell five times, getting up after each fall. Watching him fall and get up again and again, many viewers cried. He completed the game entirely on willpower.
In 2018, at Yuzuru Hanyu's game, a Chinese commentator said of him: "Fate whispered to the warrior: 'You can't withstand the storm.' The warrior responded in a low voice: 'I am the storm.' Yuzuru Hanyu is an athlete who is totally self-motivated and hard working. His achievement today deserves standing applause from the entire audience."
At this year's Beijing Winter Olympics, Yuzuru Hanyu challenged a move called 4A, a move that no one had ever done in a competition before. It is really difficult and almost the limit of a human being. He fell, didn't make it, and only got 4th place, but he still had everyone's respect. He also said he planned to continue to challenge the move.
That is the beauty of sports. Athletes keep challenging themselves, and we are encouraged to keep challenging ourselves. The only opponent we have in life is ourselves.
