Podcast Transcript

Hello everyone. Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese. Do you like street food? In many places of China, street food is extremely popular. Street food is super cheap and you have lots of choices. Many people like buying street food, including me. When I was in the university, there are all kinds of street food near the university. My friends and I all liked going to buy street food. How much money people can make in a month from selling street food? Will it be more than what office workers can make? Let’s explore it today.

No matter you are city or village in China, you can always see street food. In some cities, there are also some streets for night markets. On the street, there are all kinds of street food. Barbeque, stir-fried rice, stir-fried noodles, desserts, deep-fried chicken, some local food, and you can even see steaks! There is only something out of your imagination and there is nothing you can’t eat. Why street food is so popular in China? The most important reason is that the food is very cheap. Because people don’t need to pay for rent, the food is especially cheap. You can have a portion of stir-fried rice or noodles for only 5 yuan, a skewer of big squid barbeque for 10 yuan. You can even only spend 20 yuan for a portion of steak. To most people whose income is only a few thousand RMB a month, to many students, street food is a good deal. However, street food is different from restaurants. Most of the street food stalls do not provide tables and chairs and therefore, customers can only do takeaway. Of course, some street food is not as hygienic as restaurant food, because food is prepared in the homes of food stall’s owners. If you have a strong request for food hygiene, then probably street food might not be the best choice.

So how much money people can make from selling street food? Recently there is someone interviewed a man who sells street food Stinky Tofu in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is one of the most developed cities in China. Stinky Tofu is a local food of Changsha, Hunan Province, China. It’s also the food that Mao Zedong liked. Stinky tofu smells stinky and tastes very nice. All right… I am a bit off-topic. Let’s come back to the man who sells street food. He said that by selling street food stinky tofu in Shenzhen he can make 20 thousand yuan every month. In Shenzhen, normal office workers make more than 10 thousand a month. Maybe lots of people will feel jealous that he makes so much money, but in fact his every day is extremely hard. Let’s listen to what he said:

“Every day I have a meal in the daytime and another one in the evening. 2 meals every day. I don’t eat in the morning. Because I eat in the early morning at about 4, 5 or 6 o’clock. After food, I go to sleep. Then I finish the stuff (food preparation), then I eat my meal. After the meal, I get ready for going out to sell food. After that, I come back to have another meal.”

Sounds like an extremely tiring day. Generally speaking, he worked until 4 or 5 or even 6 in the early mornings to finish his work, finish selling street food, then he comes back for his meal. After his meal, he goes to sleep. When he wakes up he does his food preparation. In the afternoon he finishes everything, then he is ready to sell street food until the early morning of the next day.

Therefore, if people would like to make money from selling street food, their work would be very hard. However, there are many people who would like to do this hard job. They work hard for their children, families and parents. I respect and appreciate them from the bottom of my heart.
