MaoMi Chinese!

“满减”,比如说你点了50元的菜,会减少10元,“some special offer when you spend enough”。

Hello everyone. Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!

Do you normally like cooking for yourself, eating out or ordering takeaway? I am now living in the UK and I usually cook for myself because it can save money. However, when I was still in China I often order ate out also ordered takeaway because in China they are cheaper. Especially ordering a takeaway is so cheap. Today let’s talk about what it is like to order takeaway in China!

In China, there are many takeaway apps, for example, Meituan, Elema, and so on. On these takeaway apps, there are many takeaway restaurant restaurants, and people can order takeaway from these platforms. After that, the deliverer will soon deliver the takeaway. On takeaway platforms, you can order all kinds of food. They have both Chinese food and western food. You can even order a Chinese hot pot. Some restaurants will deliver the pot with it to your home. In 24 hours every day, you can always order takeaway. You can order it for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, and even for a second dinner.

Why there are so many people ordering takeaway? Firstly, there are lots of people in China and the labour force is cheaper. Therefore, the service fees given to deliverers are also cheaper. When I ordered takeaway in China, the service fees would take at least 3 pounds, but in China, they wouldn’t be more than 3 RMB. Secondly, in China, lunchtime and lunch break is longer. Normally, people can take a break from 12, and get back to work at 2. Many people who work love to order takeaway at lunchtime, because it’s both cheap and convenient.

Of course, there is a takeaway service in many countries, but what’s the difference in China? I asked 2 friends who have both lived in China as well as western countries for a long, and have ordered takeaway. Let’s listen to what they said!

“Of course the price is different! In China we order takeaway, there are many special offers if you spend enough, and some kind of red envelope. Here (she means in the UK) is not much, apart from Uber which occasionally offers 50% off. Also in China, if we order takeaway it basically takes half an hour to be delivered. If it runs over time it’s free. However, according to my limited experience of ordering takeaway here (UK), it takes at least 45 minutes or an hour. Very slow.”

My friend said that in China there are many ‘special offer if you spend enough’ and ‘red envelope’.  ‘Special offer if you spend enough’, for example, if you order food of 50 yuan, you will pay 10 yuan less.  ‘Red envelope’ is not the one people give out in Spring festival, and it was given by the apps. People can have some discounts when they order takeaway. ‘Special offer’ and ‘red envelope’ are both discounts. She also said that in China ordering takeaway can be very quick/efficient and if runs over time, people don’t need to pay.

“(In European countries and America) takeaway deliverers’ salary and the respect they receive might be different. I think that the cost of the labour force is higher in these countries. Plus that the takeaway deliverers often get tips, but in Chinese culture, there aren’t any tips. Also, customer experience is better regarding ordering takeaway in China, because you can order a second dinner even it’s really late. And even if in somewhere with little people and remote, you can also order takeaway.”

This friend said that in European countries and America, delivering takeaway is more respected, because in these countries the cost of labour is higher and they can get tips. However, it’s more convenient to order takeaway in China even in places with not many people, and there will be some deliverers who are happy to deliver it.

That’s all about MaoMi Chinese today. Are you a takeaway person? One day if you go to China, do try the super convenient takeaway service!
