Podcast Transcript

大家好,欢迎回来MaoMi Chinese!

Hello everyone. Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!

These days I have been watching a TV show called ‘Call Me by Fire’. In this show, there are 33 male singers and actors challenging all kinds of performances. A rapper I like, MC Jin, also came to the show.

MC Jin is American Born Chinese and he can speak Cantonese and English. He is also learning Mandarin. He can do really amazing freestyle. In an American music show in 2002, he got the champion of Freestyle non-stop for 7 weeks. Let’s listen to his rap, where he used English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

(MC Jin’s Rap)

This time coming to a TV show in China, MC Jin brought a book with him. What kind of book? A dictionary of Chinese idioms. 成语,means idioms. 词典,means dictionary. Chinese idioms are mostly in 4 characters, for example, people mountain people sea, which means there are too many people. There are lots of people in this show who can speak Mandarin very well, so MC Jin brought a dictionary of idioms to practise his Mandarin. Let’s listen to MC Jin and find out what idioms he has said:

“I don’t speak too many sweet words. I don't think any of us can fit in the group. I hope that in the future we can continue going through hot water and fire, is that okay? Let’s share our joy and sorrow!”

MC Jin is really funny. He said 4 idioms in a few sentences.

No.1, 甜言蜜语。甜, means sweet. 蜜,means honey. 甜言蜜语,means some words very nice which make people feel happy. Sweet words. MC Jin made a tiny mistake. He said ‘I don’t speak words of sweet words’. Actually only use 甜言蜜语 will be fine, because 甜言蜜语 is also ‘word’. We can also say, ‘In a relationship, we all like to listen to some sweet words’.

No.2 格格不入. This is also a very common idiom. 格格不入,means someone, or something, is very different from others and cannot fit in. We can say that he is a bit weird, he has no friends and cannot fit in the school.’

No.3 赴汤蹈火. 汤, means hot water, boiled water. 火, we know that it means fire. 赴汤蹈火,means that we can go through hot water and fire. If we would like to say someone is very brave and very nice to his/her friend, we can say that ‘He/she is ready to go through boiled water and fire to help his/her friends’.

No.4 同甘共苦. 甘,means sweet. In this context, it means happy moments. 苦,bitterness, and in this context it means sad moments. 同甘共苦,means a group of people can share their happy and sad moments. For example, only those who can share joy and sorrow are the true friends.

MC Jin is not only good at doing freestyle but also using Chinese idioms! Do you know these 4 idioms?
