Hello everyone, and welcome back to MaoMi Chinese. Today, we’re going to talk about a film that a lot of people in China have been talking about online recently. It’s called Niulai. You might think the name sounds a bit strange. What does “Niulai” mean? And why would a film have this name? What’s even more interesting is that, at first, hardly anyone knew about this film. But later, suddenly, lots of people started going to the cinema to watch it. So why? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.
Let’s start with the story of Niulai. It’s an animated film about a little cow called Niulai and his mum. When Niulai is young, he can’t walk, but he slowly grows up and lives with his mum. He also meets a little leopard. Together, they face some dangers and meet a lot of wolves. In the end, Niulai and the little leopard leave together, while Niulai’s mum stays behind to protect him from the wolves. So basically, it’s a story about a little cow growing up and a mother’s love.
But what really got people talking about this film wasn’t the story. It was the way the film was made. After watching it, many people thought it looked really bad. They thought the animation looked ugly, too. Gradually, lots of people started talking about the film online. There’s a Chinese word, “吐槽”, which means pointing out something you think is wrong or funny, often in a joking way. So, for example, people were making fun of Niulai online. Some people even said, “Is this really a film?”
But here comes the most interesting part. At first, hardly anyone was watching Niulai. Then the people who did watch it started saying that it looked really bad. But strangely, more and more people began to hear about it. And then some people started thinking, “Is it really that bad? I want to see it for myself.” So, for many people, the reason for going to the cinema was actually quite simple: they wanted to see just how bad a “烂片” could be.
“烂片” means a really bad film, or a film that is considered to be very poor quality. For example, if the story is bad, the visuals are bad, or the acting is bad, people might call it a “烂片”. So some people online thought this was quite funny. If everyone was saying that Niulai was a terrible film, they thought, “Well, I’m going to see it and find out just how bad it really is.” It’s a bit like looking at something really strange. You already know you might not like it, but you still want to see just how strange it is.
There’s another reason that I think is even more interesting. Some people online said that there are fewer and fewer good films in cinemas these days. If there isn’t a film that you really want to see, then why not go and watch Niulai? Some people didn’t buy a ticket because they thought Niulai was going to be a great film. Instead, they felt that the other films weren’t particularly good either, so they didn’t really want to spend money going to the cinema to watch them. If you don’t know what to watch, you might as well watch the film that everyone is talking about. At least after watching Niulai, you can have a good laugh with your friends and complain about how bad the film was.
So, would you spend money to go to the cinema just to see how bad a terrible film really is? Or, if there aren’t any good films, would you rather stay at home and not go to the cinema at all? Let us know what you think!
