大家好,欢迎回来 MaoMi Chinese!
Hello everyone, welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!
Recently, many people in China have been talking about two Chinese mathematicians, Wang Hong and Deng Yu. They won one of the highest honours in mathematics: the Fields Medal. People are not only talking about their award, but also discussing a very interesting question. They both studied at Peking University, one of the best universities in China. So why was it only after they went abroad to do research that they achieved such great success? Today, let’s talk about this news story and learn some useful words related to studying.
First, let’s talk about the Fields Medal. Many people call it the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics”. The Fields Medal is awarded once every four years, and winners must be under the age of forty. So receiving this award is really not easy. This year, both winners, Wang Hong and Deng Yu, were born in China and both studied mathematics at Peking University. Peking University is one of the best universities in China. In other words, they both achieved excellent results in the Gaokao, China’s university entrance examination. Later, they both went abroad to continue their studies and carry out research. In the end, they produced outstanding research and won the Fields Medal.
Many people in China felt very proud when they heard the news. Jiāo’ào, or “to feel proud”, means feeling happy and proud because of someone else’s success. In this case, people also felt proud because Wang Hong and Deng Yu are Chinese. Many people believe they are talented people who were trained in China. Here, let’s learn the word péiyǎng, “to nurture” or “to develop”. It means helping someone grow, learn and improve. For example, schools nurture students, companies develop young employees, and parents cultivate their children’s interests. Although Wang Hong and Deng Yu later went abroad, many people think they learnt mathematics in China when they were young, so the Chinese education system also played an important role in their success.
However, not everyone agrees. Some people asked, “Why did they become successful abroad? Why didn’t they complete this important research in China?” This led many people to discuss whether Chinese universities can support the development of young mathematicians. Zhīchí, “to support”, means helping someone so that they are more likely to succeed. For example, teachers support students, parents support their children, and universities support teachers in carrying out research. Another useful word is yánjiū, “research”. It means studying a question carefully in the hope of discovering new knowledge. Scientists do research, doctors do research, and of course mathematicians do research as well. Many people believe that good research needs many different conditions, such as enough time, enough funding, excellent teachers and classmates, and an environment where people can discuss ideas and think freely. If all these conditions are available, young researchers are much more likely to make new discoveries.
This kind of discussion doesn’t only happen in China. Many countries face the same questions. Should talented people stay in their own country, or should they go abroad to study and work? How should a country nurture young talent? How should universities support young researchers? Even today, there are no simple answers to these questions, and everyone has their own opinion.
Finally, let’s review today’s new words.
Jiāo’ào means feeling happy and proud because of someone else’s success. Usually, that person is connected to us, such as a friend, a family member, or someone from the same country.
Péiyǎng means helping someone grow, learn and improve.
Zhīchí means helping someone so that they are more likely to succeed.
Yánjiū means studying a question carefully in the hope of discovering new knowledge.
So, what do you think? If a young person has the opportunity to study abroad, do you think that’s a good thing? How do you think a country should nurture talented people? Leave us a comment and let us know your thoughts!
Amazing topic! Just for the sake of constructive feedback, I thought there was way too much English in this episode. Explaining names (like Fields) is one thing, but so many words were translated on the spot, when an explanation in simple Chinese would have been more beneficial, in my opinion.
Good article, interesting topic – who has the responsibility of teaching? Its a grey area, which this article is handling in a nice subtle way 😎
