今天我们来聊两个中国年轻人天天在用、但是很多中文学习者都会觉得有点奇怪的词：上头和下头。
先说上头。上头的意思很简单，就是：情绪来了，没有理智了。我们也知道在做什么，但就是停不下来。
有时候喝酒，很多中国人会说： 我喝两杯就上头了。意思是，我一喝酒就容易上头，开始乱说话。这里的上头，不只是醉，也是没有理智的意思。
打游戏和玩手机的时候，我们也很容易上头。比如： 我本来只想玩十分钟，结果一玩就上头了。 刚刚用手机看短视频，上头了，两个小时就过去了。意思就是：太沉迷了，完全停不下来。看电视剧，也特别容易上头。你会听到很多人说： 这部剧真的太上头了。这里的上头，有一点“上瘾”的感觉。
上头还可以用来说情绪，比如我们生气或者太激动的时候。比如，我们和人吵架， 有点上头，说话太难听了。吵架的时候一上头，什么话都说得出来。
如果我们很喜欢一个人，也可以说上头。比如，我们觉得一个人长得很好看，我们很喜欢，很上头，想天天都和这个人在一起。后来，发现他只是长得好看，性格不好，就不喜欢了，下头了。
下头是什么意思呢？就是感觉突然没了。可能只是因为一句话、一个动作，或者一件小事。比如说一个人， 他一开口我就有点下头。 本来觉得他还行，结果越聊越下头。意思就是：本来还可以，现在不行了。
上头和下头，经常一起出现。可能昨天我们对一个人很上头，很喜欢他。但是今天他说了一句奇怪的话，我们就下头了，不喜欢了。

Today we’re going to talk about two words that Chinese young people really use every single day, but that confuse a lot of Chinese learners when they hear them: shàngtóu and xiàtóu.
Let’s start with shàngtóu.
The meaning of shàngtóu is actually very simple: the emotion has kicked in, and rational thinking has gone. We know what we’re doing, but we just can’t stop ourselves.
When it comes to drinking, a lot of Chinese people will say:
“I had just two drinks and I was already shàngtóu.”
This means: as soon as I drink alcohol, I easily get shàngtóu and start talking nonsense. Here, shàngtóu doesn’t just mean being drunk — it also means losing rational control.
When we play games or use our phones, it’s also very easy to get shàngtóu. For example:
“I originally only wanted to play for ten minutes, but once I started, I got shàngtóu.”
“I was just watching short videos on my phone, got shàngtóu, and two hours passed.”
The meaning is: you’re too absorbed and completely unable to stop. Watching TV dramas is especially likely to make people shàngtóu as well. You’ll often hear people say:
“This drama is really too shàngtóu.”
Here, shàngtóu has a bit of an “addictive” feeling.
Shàngtóu can also be used to talk about emotions, especially when we’re angry or overly excited. For example, when we argue with someone:
“I got a bit shàngtóu and spoke too harshly.”
Once you get shàngtóu during an argument, you can say absolutely anything.
If we really like someone, we can also say shàngtóu. For example, we think someone is very good-looking, we really like them, we’re very shàngtóu, and we want to be with them every day. Later on, we realise that they’re just good-looking but have a bad personality, so we stop liking them — and then we’re xiàtóu.
So what does xiàtóu mean?
It means that the feeling suddenly disappears. It might be because of just one sentence, one action, or one small thing. For example, talking about a person:
“As soon as he opened his mouth, I felt a bit xiàtóu.”
“At first I thought he was alright, but the more we talked, the more xiàtóu I felt.”
The meaning is: before, it was okay — now it’s not.
Shàngtóu and xiàtóu often appear together. Yesterday, we might have been very shàngtóu about someone and really liked them. But today, they say something strange, and suddenly we’re xiàtóu and no longer like them.
