MaoMi Chinese!

Hello everyone, welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!

Today I’d like to talk to you about a word that has become very popular in China recently. It’s called “yī rén shí”, which means eating alone.

The idea of yī rén shí is actually very simple. It means one person eating a meal. It can be going to a restaurant on your own, ordering your own food, sitting down and eating slowly. It can also be buying lots of ingredients, cooking a nice meal at home, and enjoying it slowly by yourself.

In the past, in China, people usually ate together. Families ate together, friends ate together, colleagues ate together. Eating was a very lively, social activity. If someone went to a restaurant alone, some people might find it a bit strange, and even wonder whether that person was lonely or had no one to eat with.

But now, things are slowly changing. Eating alone is becoming more and more common in China, especially among young people.

There are many reasons for this. One very important reason is that life has become much faster. People are very busy at work, and everyone finishes work at different times. Sometimes it’s really hard to find time to eat with other people. In that case, eating alone actually becomes easier.

Another reason is that many people have started to realise that eating alone can be very comfortable. You don’t need to make conversation, you don’t need to think about what other people want to eat, and you don’t need to eat quickly. You can order whatever you want and take as long as you like.

Gradually, people’s views about being alone have also changed. Being alone doesn’t necessarily mean being lonely. Sometimes, being alone just means wanting a bit of quiet time.

When I was in China, I saw more and more restaurants that are friendly to people who eat alone. They have single seats and small tables, and you don’t need to share a table with strangers. Sharing a table means sitting at the same table as other customers. Some noodle shops and hotpot restaurants are even designed especially for people eating alone.

In the past, when people talked about hotpot or barbecues, many would say that you need a group of people for it to feel lively. But now, eating hotpot on your own has become very normal. One person, one small pot. You don’t need to share, you don’t need to wait for others, and you don’t need to think about what other people want to eat. For many people, this feels like freedom.

So eating alone doesn’t mean you don’t like other people, and it doesn’t mean you don’t have friends. Very often, it’s simply a choice. Today, I want to eat by myself — that’s all. Sometimes, eating alone is also a way of spending time with yourself. The day can be busy, with lots of noise, lots of people, and lots of talking. Sitting down to eat quietly on your own can actually be a kind of rest.

What about you? Do you like eating alone, or do you prefer eating with friends? Feel free to leave us a message and share your thoughts with us!
