Hello everyone, and welcome back to MaoMi Chinese! Have you ever seen people like this online? People who think they’re clever, that they know a lot, and are always criticising others? In Chinese, we call them “keyboard warriors” — 键盘侠. Today, let’s talk about this word.
Do you know what a keyboard is? It’s the row of buttons in front of a computer. We often use the keyboard to type. And do you know what 侠 means? It originally comes from 侠客, which refers to a kind of warrior in ancient China — someone strong, skilled in martial arts, who helped others and protected the weak.
But the “keyboard warriors” we talk about today are not like that at all.
A 键盘侠 is someone who loves to talk online. They’re always criticising others — saying this is wrong, that is bad. But all they do is type. They don’t really do anything in real life. You can imagine them as a “warrior” with no sword — only a keyboard in their hands.
For example, someone might post online about their life — maybe about looking after children, cooking, or being tired from work. Then a keyboard warrior jumps in to comment: “Why are you so lazy?” or “You’re so selfish.” But they don’t even know that person. Maybe they don’t even have kids, or a job themselves.
Or maybe you post on social media that you like learning English, Chinese, or Japanese. And someone comments: “Learning languages is stupid now! We have AI, who still needs to learn languages?” But they probably don’t understand AI, and they don’t know anything about languages either.
Why do some people like being keyboard warriors? One reason is that online, people don’t have to use their real names. They feel safe, and they’re not afraid of being found out. Because they don’t need to take responsibility for what they say, some people say really awful things online.
Sometimes, a keyboard warrior isn’t a bad person. They might have real thoughts and feelings — they just don’t know how to express themselves, or how to respect others when they speak.
So, next time you see someone saying horrible things online, maybe ask yourself: “Are they a keyboard warrior?” And also, “Have I ever been a keyboard warrior myself?”
In real life, saying something and doing something are two different things. If we really care about something, we can take action — not just post angry comments online.
Have you seen a keyboard warrior before? Why do you think some people want to be like that? Leave us a message and share your thoughts!
That’s all about today. We will see you again next time!
