MaoMi Chinese!

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!
Long-time listeners of MaoMi Chinese may remember that in January 2021, in Episode 25, we talked about a Chinese woman named Su Min. In September 2020, Aunt Su Min was 55 years old. Unable to bear her husband any longer, she decided to leave home. “Leaving home” means leaving one’s household to go somewhere else. After leaving, she travelled around China in her little car. It’s now 2024, and Aunt Su Min is 60 years old. Her story has been made into a film called The Determination to Leave. How is Aunt Su Min doing now? Has she divorced her husband? Let’s talk about it today!
Before the age of 55, Aunt Su Min had a difficult life. As a child, her parents didn’t care about her, only her three younger brothers. She desperately wanted to leave home, but at that time, there were very few opportunities for women. She felt that the only way out was to get married. At the age of 22, she married and soon had a child. After getting married, she discovered that her husband was a terrible man who often subjected her to emotional abuse. Emotional abuse means ignoring or neglecting someone. Aunt Su Min had a daughter, and taking care of her was exhausting and difficult, but her husband rarely helped. Besides the emotional abuse, her husband often insulted her and even hit her. At that time, Aunt Su Min had no job and could only rely on her husband. After her daughter grew up, got married, and had children of her own, Aunt Su Min often helped look after her grandchild since her daughter and son-in-law were very busy with work.
Aunt Su Min’s dream was to drive around China and the world. She worked hard, saved some money, and bought a very cheap car. Later, she bought a tent to place on the roof of her car. One day, at the age of 55, after another argument with her husband, she decided to leave home. She drove to many different parts of China and saw a lot of beautiful scenery. At night, she slept in the tent on top of her car. From that day onwards, she started living her dream. She shared her story on social media, and now, she has over a million followers. Later, Aunt Su Min bought herself a motorhome, so she could live more comfortably. Sometimes, her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild visit her, and they travel together in the motorhome.
You may be wondering: “What about Aunt Su Min’s husband? Did they get divorced?” Aunt Su Min always wanted a divorce, but her husband refused. In China, if either the husband or wife doesn’t agree to a divorce, it has to go to court. This year, Aunt Su Min brought up divorce with her husband again, and her husband said, “Fine, we can divorce, but you have to give me 500,000 yuan.” Since Aunt Su Min had made some money, her husband wanted a share of it. Furious, Aunt Su Min consulted a lawyer, thinking about going to court. However, the lawyer told her that if she went to court, the judge would likely split their assets equally. Splitting assets equally means dividing them in half. This also meant that any money Aunt Su Min earned on social media in the future might also have to be split. Left with no other option, Aunt Su Min ended up giving her husband 160,000 yuan, and they finally got divorced.
A few days ago, 60-year-old Aunt Su Min wrote a letter to her younger self from five years ago, and this is what she said:
“I want to write a letter to my younger self from five years ago. The shackles placed on us women by this world are already numerous and heavy enough. Be proud of yourself. You’ve survived so many difficult times on your own. I hope you’ll have the courage to face the wind, the snow, and the rising sun in the years ahead. I hope you’ll live freely, always on the road to seeing flowers.”
Aunt Su Min says that women already bear many heavy shackles. Shackles refer to things that hold people back. She hopes that she can have the courage to face the wind and snow, which in Chinese often symbolise hardships. She also hopes to face the rising sun, which symbolises hope. She wishes to live freely, always on the path to seeing flowers, meaning she hopes to always be free and see more beautiful sights.
This year, a film company made a movie based on Aunt Su Min’s story, titled The Determination to Leave. If you’re interested in her story, be sure to check out this Chinese film!
This Tuesday, we’ll also be discussing on MaoMi Chinese+ why getting a divorce is so difficult in China. If you’re interested, you are very welcome to join the MaoMi Chinese membership!
