MaoMi Chinese!
Hello everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese!
Do you enjoy drinking coffee? How many cups of coffee do you have each day? How much does a cup of coffee cost in your country?
In the past, Chinese people rarely drank coffee, but now, many working people have coffee almost every day. Starbucks used to be very popular in China, but now people prefer going to Luckin Coffee. There are 20,000 Luckin Coffee shops in China. Why is Luckin Coffee so popular? Today, let’s have a chat about China’s favourite coffee shop — Luckin Coffee.
The first Luckin Coffee shop opened in Beijing in October 2017. At that time, people thought that it would close down quickly. Why? Because back then, Chinese people still didn’t really like drinking coffee. In 2020, according to a survey, the average Chinese person only drank about 10 cups of coffee per year. At that time, coffee in China was still quite expensive. A cup of coffee at Starbucks would cost more than 30 RMB. So, what did Luckin do to become more and more popular?
First, Luckin offers a wide variety of coffee. For example, they have coconut-flavoured lattes, which are called “Raw Coconut Lattes”. Chinese people really love this flavour. In just two years, Luckin sold 300 million cups of this coconut latte! Besides the coconut latte, Luckin also has orange-flavoured iced Americanos and coffees with Chinese tea flavours. In 2023, Luckin introduced the “Sauce-flavoured Latte,” which contains alcohol. Sauce-flaoured Maotai, the most famous and expensive alcohol in China, was added to the coffee. People just couldn’t resist trying a cup. “Can’t resist” means feeling like you have to do something and can’t stop yourself. In just two days, Luckin sold over 5 million cups of sauce-flavoured lattes, generating over 100 million RMB in sales.
Second, Luckin coffee is not only delicious but also affordable. A Starbucks coffee costs around 40 RMB, but you can buy a Luckin coffee for just 9.9 RMB. Luckin offers a lot of discount vouchers, so people can spend less money to get coffee. With the cost of coffee being so much lower, people are more willing to drink it. In fact, it’s partly thanks to Luckin that coffee has become increasingly popular in China.
Third, Luckin Coffee is incredibly convenient. Luckin has an app, and people can order coffee through it. About five minutes later, they can pick up their coffee at a Luckin shop — it’s quick and convenient. Worried that a Luckin shop might be far away? No need! In many cities, there are so many Luckin Coffee shops that you’ll find one just a few hundred metres away. In some big cities, there are more than 1,000 Luckin stores. Many people grab a cup of Luckin coffee before work because it’s much faster than Starbucks, making it super convenient.
Have you ever tried Luckin Coffee? Is coffee expensive in your country? Feel free to leave us a comment and share your thoughts with us!

Not sure if you’ll see this so I’ll comment on the next episode too. A while back the audio player bar on the website started to hide below the text if I scroll down so I can’t pause the podcast. I have to scroll up fast and then pause, then click play and scroll down quickly and find my position. If you look at an older podcast e.g. 70 you can see this doesn’t happen. Hope this is something you can fix for newer episodes. Thanks so much for making this fantastic podcast. I listen to it every day and I can notice the rapid improvement in my Chinese.
Thanks for this! We will look into that and hopefully fix it soon.
Hi, thank you for this vers interesting content.
I have a question about this sentence :
Why do you use 多元?
Is it necessary ?
“卖了一亿人民币” would be a correct sentence too ?
Thank you for your help.
Thanks for the question!
Number +多 means more than…
Hope it helps!
I go to Luckin or Starbucks in Beijing and other cities in China almost daily when I am there. My drink is Meishi and I prefer Luckin. Apart from the price difference, Luckin’s business model is like a conveyor belt. Get in, pick up and leave. There’s one or two tiny tables for waiting and there are kuaidi44 xiao3 ge1 coming and going. Starbucks, however, is more laid back with several tables. So they both have different market targets. I’m in the USA and grind my own coffee but if I’m out I’ll either go to Starbucks or Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. A small cup of meishi is around $3.50. I also want to say I have been following your podcasts for a couple of years and have absolutely improved my listening. So thank you for your efforts. Xinku13.
