Hello everyone, welcome back to MaoMi Chinese! Very happy to meet everyone again.
This is episode 10 of MaoMi Chinese- how well can English children speak Mandarin Chinese?
As lots of you know that I am teaching Chinese in an English school, so how English schools learn Chinese? Is Chinese very popular in UK? Today I would like to talk about it with you.
20 years ago, Chinese as a foreign language is not very popular in UK. At that time there are only a small amount of schools did Chinese course, and all of them only did after-school club. However, Chinese is getting more and more popular in UK, and there are also more and more English schools which do Chinese courses. Nowadays, Chinese is a subject of GCSE. In 2013, there are over 10 thousand of English students who sat GCSE Chinese exam, and there are more and more.
My school started offering Chinese lessons from 2018. In secondary school, I have over 100 students learning Chinese. We have lessons twice a week and every lesson is 80 minutes. In primary school, I have over 200 students. We have students once a week, and every lesson is 1-hour long. My students all think that Chinese is not easy, but it’s super interesting. They often ask me: “Miss, when can we travel to China?” They all want to visit China. They want to visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City In Beijing and giant Panda in Chengdu, Sichuan. They also want to go to my hometown-Guangzhou.
In 2016, British Council developed Mandarin Excellence Program. Students who take part in the program have to learn Mandarin 8 hours a week: 4 hours for school lessons and 4 hours in doing homework, self-teaching and participating cultural activities. Therefore, these children can speak Mandarin really well.
Now let’s listen to English kids speaking Mandarin!
